Camborne-Redruth Floral Club

NAFAS-LOGO.jpg

Our club started in 1955 on the first Wednesday in March at the Community Centre in Camborne.  The founder chairman was Mrs. Rees, who, having made several visits to America was inspired by the flower arranging that she had witnessed both there and on the voyage on the ship.  Consequently, she set up a club in Camborne.

Meetings were in the form of demonstrations by Mrs. Rees followed by workshops for the members to practise.  Mechanics in those days were simply wire netting, sand and stones.  Local demonstrators, of which there were few at the time, were invited about every 2-3 months.  Membership grew to 80 and the annual subscription was five shillings!!

Other more famous demonstrators such as George Smith, Constance Spry and Julia Clements also came to the club on several occasions and these visits were much appreciated by the members.

The club was invited to stage exhibits in Westminster Abbey, Exeter Cathedral and St. Paul's Cathedral.  On the first flower festival staged there, invitations had gone out to the world and the club representatives did their arrangements in the choir stalls alongside representatives from South Africa.

The club also organised teams of members who would place fresh floral arrangements every week in Blackwood House and the hospitals at Redruth, Tehidy and Hayle until the NHS stopped it.
